"Oil and Marble"
One of Six Exclusive Paintings from the Dark for Light Series
The Qualities of Oil and Marble are similar to night and day. The actual physical properties of a portion of marble is smooth, elegantly natural and a depiction of perfection in nature. Oil, however, is all encompassing, all consuming and permanent depending on the surface it touches. I worked to merge these qualities, creating a portrait away from the perfection of light and delving into the harmonies of night.
'Oil and Marble' tells a story of reslience through hardship. It delves into the depiction of life and light, the aftermath of a life well lived. Though we all began our journeys with the perfection to match a piece of marble, the true beauty in our narratives is found in who we become after facing loss, heartbreak and death.
The layers of gold leaf among streaks of white and dusty brown are a reminder of the incredible grace that exists despite the distractions that try to hide it. Who we are is composed by the way we rise from the darkness in our lives, and from this resilience we create a dense lineage of compassion; an impactful source of beauty that nothing in nature can match.
Created with oil paints and gel mediums, this painting consists of layers of genuine 22k Gold Leaf on textured canvas and Sterling Silver Leaf ink. Charcoal and watercolor mediums are also present under layers of gesso.
